Social Security For Who???

When the City of Jacksonville started the pension system for its employees, it opted NOT to participate in the Social Security program.

By doing this, the city saved themselves the 6.25% employer contribution rate it would have had to pay for its employees to enjoy the benefits of Social Security.

However, by doing this, the City of Jacksonville eliminated its employees from participating in Social Security and thus receiving this benefit after they retire. This made the pension provided by the City a much more valuable commodity to the employee.

Now....Critics will claim that fire fighters are still eligible to collect Social Security from their off day jobs. This is TRUE. However, on average, the rate they are allowed to collect is roughly 40% of what a regular person can collect.

This is known as the Windfall Elimination Provision.   This provision is a federal law that affects how the amount of a fire fighters retirement or disability benefit is calculated if they receive a pension from work where Social Security taxes were not taken out of your pay.
